In the early part of the 17th century, several members of the Lucas family migrated from England and settled in the sister island, where their descendants still remain, in the counties of Clare , Cork , King's County , and Monaghan . In the last named they acquired, partly by purchase and partly by royal grant, considerable estates, which were erected into a manor by patent of Charles II. , in 1683 , "to be called the manor of Castle Shane," and the principal part of which has ever since continued in the family.

On 21 June 1854
Baltic, Hecla, with two other ships, was bombarding Bomarsund, a fort in the Åland Islands off of Finland
Fire was returned from the fort, and at the height of the action a live shell landed on Hecla's upper deck, with its fuse still hissing. All hands were ordered to fling themselves flat on the deck, but Lucas with great presence of mind ran forward and hurled it into the sea.
